Students in Australia and New Zealand are on track for a record-breaking Word Mania, with just two weeks to go until the competition officially starts.
Created by LiteracyPlanet, an award-winning online English literacy education program, Word Mania challenges students to build as many words as they can in three minutes, from 15 randomly generated letter tiles.
Students have really stepped up to the challenge this year, spelling 33 million words correctly! With over 1.5 million Word Mania games already played and a 36% average improvement in scores expected, this year is shaping up to be the biggest Word Mania yet.
Word Mania is always a hit in schools and this fun, free competition is a great way to engage students and develop crucial English literacy skills.
Vicki Matthews from Nichols Point Primary School in Mildura, Victoria, is one teacher who’s noticed a significant improvement.
“It is so much educational fun that caters for all our Year 2-6 students. Students are always motivated to improve their literacy skills,” she said.
“Because of the high level of engagement, students want to use it at home and during class time, so that means more time completing meaningful tasks that are relevant to them. Thus improving their literacy skills and learning outcomes.”
Students have until 9 August 2019 to sharpen their skills as part of the Practice Round, before the official Competition Rounds from 12 August 2019 to 23 August 2019.
The top-performing schools with face off in the Final Round for the glory of being crowned Word Mania champions and a share in $350,000 in prizes.
